Arizona licensure process

I was approved to sit for the FE or PE exam and then passed it; why is the Arizona board telling me I don’t meet requirements for EIT certification or P.E. licensure?

Being approved to sit for the exams does not automatically guarantee that the Arizona board will certify you as an EIT or grant you licensure as a P.E. The Arizona Board of Technical Registration will evaluate your credentials and make the final determination to certify you as an EIT or to license you as a P.E.

Do I have to pass the FE exam before I take the PE exam? Can I waive the FE exam?

To be approved to sit for the PE exam, you must first pass the FE exam. Only those with 12 years of qualifying experience after graduation with a qualifying degree can request a waiver of the FE exam. Requests to waive the FE must be submitted in writing along with your application for approval before you pass the PE exam. The Arizona Board of Technical Registration will make the final decision on granting the waiver request.

When should I submit my work experience documentation?

Submit your work experience details after you pass the PE exam. When you sign the Arizona PE Exam Approval Application, you are attesting that you understand and have met the experience requirement, but you are not required to provide documentation at that time.

Your passing letter will instruct you to access the Application Forms for the State of Arizona Board of Technical Registration Professional Engineers, where you will detail your work experience. You will then submit it directly to the Arizona board office for review. Your Arizona exam approval application file (including your application, education documents, and a record of your PE passing score) will be forwarded to the Arizona board for you. The application for licensure is on the Arizona board Web site in the Applications section on the right side of the page.
