NCEES offers reports to engineering schools that can be used to assess how their students perform on the FE exam. These outcomes assessment reports are available for any institution that has an ABET-accredited engineering program. For additional information or to request reports please contact fereports@ncees.org Using the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination to Assess Academic Programs (PDF) What are the advantages of using the FE exam as an outcomes assessment tool?Using the FE exam as an outcomes assessment tool provides a means of objective comparison with other institutions. The detailed reports of performance by subject area provide information that can help to evaluate a program’s success in achieving the outcomes specified by Engineering Criteria 2000. Over time, these reports can also help the program document the effect of curriculum revisions, teaching innovations, and other actions taken to improve student mastery of engineering studies. What result data is available?NCEES provides institution-specific reports detailing the subdiscipline-specific performance of students and graduates taking the FE exam. The most widely used of these reports includes performance data for the institution’s currently enrolled students and national performance information. Should pass rates be used as a measure of program outcomes?Pass rates are not a good measure of program outcomes because they are based on a minimum technical competency criterion developed for licensure purposes. A more effective approach is to select specific examination topics consistent with your program’s goals and then to examine students’ performance on those topics, using data from several test periods. |
