How and when will I be notified of my exam results?

Typically, you will receive your results approximately 12 weeks following the exam date. Your licensing board will contact you with your results, usually in writing:

If you pass the exam, you will receive a letter stating that you have passed.

If you fail the exam, you will be notified that you failed and be provided with a diagnostic report showing your strengths and weaknesses.

Please direct all questions about pass/fail notification to your licensing board. While NCEES compiles the exam results, the individual licensing boards will notify examinees of exam results.

Why does it take so long for NCEES to release scores?

To ensure that the process is fair and equitable to examinees and to maintain the validity of the exam questions, NCEES uses a rigorous scoring process for each of the NCEES multiple-choice examinations. The process is summarized below.

First, NCEES scans all answer sheets as they are received from the states. Answer sheets are flagged for review when they are missing critical information, such as the depth module examinees worked or the candidate ID number. The scoring process continues only when these issues are resolved.

Next, a psychometric analysis is performed on a sample population of answer sheets from each multiple-choice examination to identify any questions with unusual statistics, which flag the question for review.

Then, at least two subject-matter experts who are licensed engineers or surveyors review the flagged items. In addition, NCEES reviews all Candidate Comment Forms, and the subject-matter experts consider comments on the forms about specific exam questions. If the reviews confirm an error in a question, credit may be given for more than one answer.

When the analyses and reviews are completed, NCEES changes the answer keys as necessary. The passing score and the final correct answers for each exam are then used to score all the answer sheets. Scanners are calibrated before and during scoring. A percentage of the answer sheets are hand-graded and the results compared to the machine score to ensure accuracy of results.

Finally, NCEES releases the results to the state boards or testing agencies, who in turn report the results to examinees.

Is it possible to access my exam results electronically or online?

In most cases, you must wait for a notification sent to you through the mail. Please contact your licensing board regarding any alternative methods of notification.

How should I use the information furnished on the diagnostic report sent to failing candidates?

Use the diagnostic report to determine how you need to concentrate your study for future exams. The report lists the percentages of correctly answered questions in each knowledge area of the exam. A low percentage (0-50%) in a content area contributed to your failing the exam. Substantial study of that content area is recommended prior to retaking the exam. A marginal percentage (50-75%) in a content area indicates your understanding may be improved by further study, thus improving your chances of passing the examination. Further review of a content area with a high percentage (75-100%) may also improve your chances of passing the examination. This is the best guide you will have for determining your strong and weak subject areas.

May I review my exam and appeal my results?

In the interest of exam security, NCEES does not facilitate exam reviews and appeals.

NCEES does offer hand scoring of examinee answer sheets to provide verification of examination results. A fee is assessed for each request for hand scoring, and requests will be honored up to 60 days following the release of examination results to Member Boards and testing services, unless a jurisdiction's statutes require otherwise. Examinees who took the exam for one of the following states must contact ELSES at 877-536-7729 to obtain a Hand Score Request Form: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Examinees who took the exam in a state not listed above, please contact your licensing board to obtain information about hand scoring and the associated fees and deadlines.
