 Summary — Become an exam development volunteer and help produce NCEES exams: What do NCEES exam development volunteers do?The volunteers develop the NCEES examinations, one question at a time. The development process relies on thousands of volunteer hours donated by hundreds of licensed engineers and surveyors.Exams: • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) • Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) • Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) • Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) Who typically becomes a volunteer?All exam volunteers must be licensed professional engineers and surveyors. Some are recently licensed, others are in mid-career, and some are in late career or retirement. These practitioners come from consulting, industry, government, and education. All are motivated by the desire to contribute to their profession by personally investing time in exam development. Many participate throughout their careers and find that they gain great personal satisfaction as well as develop rewarding professional acquaintances and personal friendships because of their participation.How do volunteers participate in the exam development process?
There is at least one committee for each NCEES exam, with the PE Civil Engineering Committee having 5 subcommittees. NCEES currently produces 18 engineering and 2 surveying exams. The committees seek to have each exam ready for print no later than six months prior to administration, though they typically work on examinations scheduled for administrations two to three cycles in the future. How often and where do the volunteers meet?Most exam development committees meet several times a year; some meet only once every few years. Volunteers typically arrive on a Thursday night and get a good night's rest for a marathon of question development and examination review, typically lasting all day on Friday and Saturday.Committees often work at the NCEES headquarters in Clemson, South Carolina, but other sites are occasionally used for their convenient access. Do volunteers earn professional development hours (PDHs)?Yes, all committee volunteers can earn professional development hours (PDH) for the time spent working on examinations, if allowed by their jurisdiction.If I become a volunteer, will my costs be reimbursed?NCEES provides all funding for the FE, FS, PS and Group I PE exams (Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical, Structural I, and Structural II). Volunteers working on these exams are reimbursed for travel, meals, and lodging.Funding for Group II PE exams (Agricultural, Architectural, Control Systems, Fire Protection, Industrial, Metallurgical, Mining/Mineral, Nuclear, Petroleum, and Naval Architecture/Marine) is provided by sponsoring professional societies according to their funding policy.
