What is a Model Law Structural Engineer?

The term Model Law Structural Engineer (MLSE) refers to a licensed engineer who meets the following criteria:

  • Graduated from an engineering program accredited by EAC/ABET.
  • Passed a minimum of 18 semester (27 quarter) hours of structural analysis and design courses. At least 9 semester (14 quarter) hours must be structural design courses.
  • Passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
  • Passed 16 hours of structural examinations consisting of one of the following:
    • NCEES structural examinations, 8 hours of which are the Structural II examination
    • 16-hour state-written structural examinations taken prior to 2004
    • NCEES SE II plus 8-hour state-written examinations
  • Completed 4 years of acceptable structural engineering experience after confirmation of a bachelor's degree. A maximum of 1 year of credit may be given for graduate engineering degrees that include at least 6 semester (9 quarter) hours of structural engineering (in addition to the 18 hours noted above).
  • Has no disciplinary action on record.

How do I apply for the MLSE designation?

  • New applicants must first establish an NCEES Council Record before applying for the MLSE designation. If you do not have a NCEES Council Record, you may begin the process by clicking here.
  • Existing Record holders who are requesting a review of their established Record for MLSE designation should login and complete the online application.

What are the fees for the review of my structural credentials?

The fee is $50. This fee is submitted with the MLSE application and is nonrefundable.

Education

List all universities attended, the degree obtained, if any, and the year(s) of attendance. Note any courses that should be considered for MLSE designation, along with course number, description, credit hours, and whether it is design or analysis. List the total amount of time for undergraduate work and graduate work. Provide a detailed course description on a separate sheet of paper for courses in which the content is not clear from the course description (such as master's or senior thesis, special projects, special problems/topics, and supervised individual studies).

Existing Record holders: If you have attended any universities or colleges since the time of completion of your file and would like for this information to be considered, you will need to contact the institution and have transcripts forwarded directly to the Records Department.
